The Leadership Theory of Donald Trump

Donald Trump is a real-estate mogul who represents true New York City hustle.  He has been known as vicious, cutthroat, and has a no mercy attitude towards his competitors. He is tough, crass, and could really care less what people think of him.  He is driven by a fundamental belief, “Since you’ve got to think, think big”.  Donald’s power, money, and pedigree connections allowed him to create his own universe of self-worship in which, every molecule has been stamped with the “TRUMP” insignia.

Donald Trumps father, Fred Trump, was a second-generation businessman whose own father came to the great land of opportunity from another piece of real estate better known as Sweden

Little did Fred realize that the planets were already aligning and that a series of events were in motion that would create the precise environment that would cultivate the birth of an icon.  The series of events started with the unfortunate passing of Fred’s father, which forced him to take on role as the family breadwinner.

Bearing the weight of his family, Fred saw an opportunity to make a living in real estate and seized it.  He opened his own business and then transformed his opportunity into real wealth through a series of savvy investments the most successful of which were the building of rental properties (barracks) in the New York boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island .  The magnetism, success and love of real estate was now in the family blood, and that blood flowed through the veins of Fred’s new son, Donald Trump.

Donald was born on a little piece of real estate in New York , NY June 14, 1946.

Little did Fred realize that his son’s love for real estate would be the equivalent to Shakespeare’s passion of the sonnet.  Donald once said, “It’s tangible, it’s solid, it’s beautiful.  It’s artistic from my point of view, and I just love it (real estate).”

Early on Donald had always been tough, assertive, and had very high expectations.  He mentions in this book, “The Art of the Deal” that he once gave his music teacher a black eye for not knowing anything about music.

At age 13, Donald was sent to a military academy in upstate New York .  While not happy to be in such a restrictive environment, he did admit that it helped him with discipline and controlling his aggression.  Not only did it help with his demeanor, it ensured the physical safety of all substandard music teachers in New York area.  By the time Donald graduated, his discipline and leadership training resulted in his appointment to the Captain of the Cadets.

In 1964, Trump successfully applied to University of Pennsylvania and was admitted into the Wharton School of Finance.  Upon graduation, he moved back to the New York real estate world to work with his father for another 5 years.  Trump’s think big mentality forced him to move to Manhattan , and begin to etch his mark (TRUMP) in the solid establishment of upscale real estate. As an earlier testament to his wealth and success, he purchased a yacht from a Saudi financier for a reported $100 million.

His think big attitude forced him beyond just the buying and selling of properties and included the strategic, self-promotion of the Trump name, and a deeper understanding of the psychology of America ’s elite.  While other high-end properties were lowering prices, “The Donald” decided to raise rates, and he never lost a tenant. All ways the businessman, he even established a licensing deal with a company in Seoul for use of his name for a reported $5 million dollars.  As further testament to the “Trump” empire, the Gallup Organization stated that 98% of all Americans know who he is.

Trump thrives in an all or nothing environment, and that’s usually what he has; all or nothing.  Marriages aside, Trump facedfinancial destruction in the early 90’s, only to recover in one of the most amazing second half comebacks in history.  Trump was not only able to eliminate a huge portion of his personal $900 million debt, but was also able to reduce the majority of his $3.5 Billion business debt by the end of the 1990’s.  Trump eventually admitted that, “A little more moderation would be good.  Of course, my life hasn’t exactly been one of moderation”. Then lighting, struck Trump twice when his casino empire falling into bankruptcy in 2004. Maybe it’s time for another lesson in moderation for “The Donald”.

His success and failures have been chronicled in 6+ books including, “The Art of the Deal”, and “The Art of the Comeback”and his newer series based on his reality show, “The Apprentice”.  Watching Donald’s career is like watching a heart beat on an EKG, its peaks and valleys, it’s all or nothing baby.

I can best close with “The Donald’s own words, “Anyone who thinks my story is anywhere near over is sadly mistaken.”
